An international partnership between Scotland and China, forged to fight biodiversity loss this week celebrates its 30th anniversary. For many decades, scientists from the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) and the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences (KIB/CAS), have been working together to understand, record and conserve plant diversity, a relationship which was put on a formal footing by a twinning agreement in 1991.

ITER, one of the most ambitious energy projects in the world today, had its the first correction coil BCC/4 lowered into place on Oct.21. Zheng Zhemin, an academician of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a winner of the State Scientific and Technological Award, died of disease at 97 on Wednesday. Zheng, born in Jinan, East China's Shandong province on Oct 2, 1924, devoted himself to research in the areas of elastic mechanics, explosive processing and underground nuclear detonations.

Computer Network Information Center (CNIC) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Committee on Data for International Science Council co-hosted hybrid events to launch the Global Open Science Cloud (GOSC) on June 28, 2021. With initial funding from the CAS, the project will be coordinated by CNIC and CODATA as an important early project of CODATA Decadal Programme: Making Data Work for Cross-Domain Grand Challenges. The project will promote discussions towards agreements and preliminary demonstrations on technical and policy alignment between established and emerging open science platforms.

The Platform of Advanced Photon Source (PAPS) technology R&D project started operation on June 28, with equipment such as the radio frequency and cryogenic systems, and magnet measurement and X-ray optical inspection devices coming into service. Among the first group of research platform projects in Beijing, the PAPS project is the first to pass scientific acceptance and begins operation. PAPS provides strong support for construction, testing and technology R&D for the High Energy Proton Source (HEPS).

Professor CHEN Chunying was named winner of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Environment Prize, according to the announcement released this Tuesday June 8th Beijing time, for her pioneering contributions in exploration of nano–bio interface. Professor CHEN is now working for National Center for Nanoscience and Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Her research on nano–bio interface provides fundamental insights into the fate of nanomaterials in biota and the environment.

A total of 3,718 new and newly recorded species have been discovered in Yunnan Province from 1992-2020, according to a press conference in Kunming on May 22. The sixth poloidal field superconducting coil (or PF6 coil), the heaviest of all six superconducting magnet coils of ITER (short for International Thermonuclear Fusion Experimental Reactor) project, successfully sits at the bottom of the tokamak pit in ITER site in France on Apr. 21 local time, under the supervision of Fusion for Energy, witnessing another international collaboration moment.
