With less than 1,000 Yangtze finless porpoises (YFPs) believed left on the planet, SeaWorld in collaboration with researchers from the Institute of Hydrobiology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, has published a new, foundational study in Frontiers in Physiology establishing an official spectrum for biologists and veterinarians to determine if members of the species are healthy.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences has donated water analysis technology equipment to Maasai Mara University located in southwest Kenya. The over 100-million-shilling (1 million U.S. dollars) equipment will greatly aid in research to address challenges facing drylands and wetlands in Kenya and the East Africa region.

China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), the world's largest single-dish radio telescope, has identified 93 new pulsars since October 2017, the research team announced Friday. Since the first time FAST reported it had found pulsars in October 2017, the telescope has already detected 132 promising pulsar candidates, 93 of them had been confirmed, the research team said.

Two satellites for technological experiments were sent into space by a Kuaizhou-1A, or KZ-1A, carrier rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Northwest China on Saturday. The rocket blasted off at 7:41 am and sent the two satellites into their planned orbit.

Chinese researchers have identified a gene that enables hybrid rice varieties to have a higher yield and shortens maturity duration by seven to 20 days. Researchers from the Institute of Genetics and Development Biology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as Sichuan Agriculture University found that among hybrid rice varieties with a gene named Ef-cd, the nitrogen utilization was facilitated and photosynthesis rate was improved.

The Chinese-led research provides important clues to the spin-down mechanism and the magnetic field structure of pulsars, highly magnetized neutron stars born from supernova explosions of massive stars, and the densest stars known to exist.

Scientists in southwest China's Yunnan Province said on Monday they have discovered a new species of begonia in the city of Pu'er. The species was named "Begonia austroyunnanensis" by researchers with the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Astrophysicists have discovered that the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) surrounding the famous pulsar B0540-69 brightened gradually after the pulsar experienced a sudden spin-down rate transition (SRT). This discovery, made by a group of astrophysicists led by GE Mingyu and LU Fangjun at the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, provides important clues to the spin-down mechanism and the magnetic field structure of the pulsar, as well as the physical properties of the PWN.

Satellite orbit has been determined autonomously within 10 km (3σ) by observing an X-ray pulsar with the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) satellite, according to a study by Chinese scientists just published in the Astrophysical Journal Supplement. On June 15, 2017, China launched its first X-ray astronomy satellite, Insight-HXMT.

Chinese scientists announced Wednesday that they had developed a portable mass spectrometer for rapid on-site detection of drug mixtures. The 13-kg gadget is 32 cm long, 32 cm wide and 24 cm tall, and has built-in batteries which can be used for three hours of field operation.

Chinese researchers have completed an in-situ detection experiment on near-space atmospheric turbulence in northwest China's Qinghai Province and southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, according to Science and Technology Daily on Wednesday.
