A New Species of Ericaceae Reported from Northern Myanmar

During recent China-Myanmar joint field expeditions to survey plant diversity in northern Myanmar, researcher from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences collected several specimens of an interesting Agapetes with almost fleshy branchlets and stout pedicels around Putao, Kachin State.

Exceptionally Preserved Eggs and Embryos Reveal the Life History of a Pterosaur

Dr. WANG Xiaolin, Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and his team reported on hundreds of three-dimensional (3D) pterosaur eggs of the species Hamipterus tianshanensis from a Lower Cretaceous site in the Turpan-Hami Basin, 16 of which contain embryonic remains, allowing for an unexpected look at the embryology and reproductive strategy of these flying reptiles. Their study was published online 30 November in Science.

Beidou Upgrades for Global Reach

China has begun to upgrade its Beidou Navigation Satellite System with global-coverage capabilities through the launch of new satellites. Two third-generation Beidou satellites, the first of their type, were lofted atop a Long March 3B carrier rocket from Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province on Sunday night and were placed in medium Earth orbit thousands of kilometers above the Earth. They will function for at least 12 years.

China's Maritime Power Boosted Under Outside Pressure

China's ambitious maritime power strategy has achieved much in the last five years and analysts argued on Monday that external provocations have played a critical role in forcing China to boost its seagoing defense capabilities. In the past five years, China's has built aircraft carriers, a new type of destroyer and overseas ports along the route of the 21st Maritime Silk Road. The nation has constructed lighthouses and explored resources in the South China Sea as well as conducting Arctic and Antarctic scientific research.

China and Nepal Collaborate on Glacier Research

Chinese glaciological activities date back to the 1950s, and underwent an expansion with the establishment of the Lanzhou Institute of Glaciology and Geocryology, located in the central province of Gansu, in the 1980s. An Ice Core Laboratory was created in 1991, which expanded into the Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute (CAREERI), a component of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The State Key Laboratory of Cryospheric Science (SKLCS) was established in 2007 by CAREERI and the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, which is also a unit within the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Since 2014, researchers from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences have carried out repeated China-Myanmar joint botanical expeditions in northern Myanmar and collected numerous Impatiens species.

First Mars Simulation Base to Be Built in Northwest China

China's first Mars simulation base will be built in Northwest China's Qinghai province, China News Service reported on Tuesday. Located in Dachaidan Hongya region of Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan autonomous prefecture, a hinter land of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the base will be established in Qaidam Basin.

A New Species of Lamiaceae Recorded in Northeastern Myanmar

Researchers from Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden (XTBG) and Southeast Asia Biodiversity Research Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)consulted a large amount of literature and studied specimens. They found that seven Premna species have been recorded from Kachin State. However, none of them is morphologically similar to the putative new species.

China Succeeds in Mining Combustible Ice in South China Sea

China has succeeded in collecting samples of combustible ice in the South China Sea, a major breakthrough that may lead to a global energy revolution, Minister of Land and Resources. This is China's first success in mining flammable ice at sea, after nearly two decades of research and exploration, the minister said at a trial mining site in the Shenhu area of the South China Sea Thursday.

Experts Propose Plan to Enhance Deep-sea Research Cooperation

Chinese scientists have put forward an ambitious plan at a two-day forum in Qingdao, Shandong province, aimed at boosting the country's deep-sea research. The plan, dubbed the "Indo-Pacific Scientific Initiative", will also work to enhance cooperation with countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.

China to Build Observation Station to Protect Pamir Plateau

China will build an observation station in the country's northwest Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region to improve the ecology of Pamir Plateau, a busy passage once for traders traveling along the ancient Silk Road. The station to be built in Taxkorgan County will be used by researchers concerned with water resources, biodiversity, grassland productivity, climate change and disaster warning and forecasting.

Chinese Scientists Discover a New Species of Catfish in Myanmar

During a survey of the freshwater fishes of the Mali Hka River drainage in the Hponkanrazi Wildlife Sanctuary, Myanmar, scientists CHEN Xiaoyong, QIN Tao and CHEN Zhiying, from Kunming Institute of Zoology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, identified a new catfish species among the collected specimens. It is distinct with a set of morphological features including its mouthparts and coloration.

Scientists Discover New Species of Genus Fejervarya-Fejervarya chiangmaiensis sp. nov. in Northern Thailand

During a field survey conducted from June to September, 2013, in the farmland of Ban Monjong and Omkoi District in northern Thailand, the research team led by Dr. CHE Jing at Kunming Institute of Zoology of Chinese Academy of Sciences discovered a new species of Fejervarya, which was named Fejervarya chiangmaiensis sp. nov.

Water Tower of Central Asia Keeps Shrinking: Study

Total water storage in Central Asia has been decreasing in the last half century due to accelerating glacier melting caused by global warming, a research led by professor CHEN Yaning from the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography in Urumqi found recently.
