China Launched Next-generation Geostationary Meteorological Satellite FY-4-01

China successfully launched Fengyun-4-01 (FY-4-01), the first of Chinese second-generation geostationary meteorological satellite at Xichang Satellite Launch Center, southwest China's Sichuan Province. FY-4-01 is the first of Fengyun 4 geostationary meteorological satellite family of CMA, which is an important milestone for the development of weather satellites in China.

UN Environment, China Collaborate on Major South-South Initiative

On 14 November 2016, UN Environment launched a decade-long (2016-2025) flagship programme on Climate, Ecosystems and Livelihoods (CEL), supported by China and designed to assist countries in the Global South with effective delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate targets while improving the livelihoods of their people and protecting their ecosystems.

China Joins Hands with Kazakhstan to Build Urban Ecological Barrier

Less than a year, with more than 5,000 plants of 13 species adopted from China, an urban ecological barrier around the city of Astana has begun to take shape in Kazakhstan, thanks to the cooperation between the two countries. This is a foreign aid projects approved by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology earlier this year. Survey on Astana’s protection forest has been completed, following with a forestation plan designed for the saline-alkaline land and low-lying water-logged land in the Astana region.

China's Beidou System Targets Global Service Around 2020

The BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), which is independently developed and operated by China, is well positioned to provide services worldwide. It will service countries along the Belt and Road Initiative by 2018 and expand its reach globally by 2020. The BeiDou project was formally launched in 1994. On June 12 this year, China successfully launched the 23rd BeiDou navigation satellite that was said to be well prepared for extensive civil use and providing global services.

China Eyes Silk Road Countries for Its Beidou Satellite System

China on Thursday vowed national efforts to complete its Beidou satellite navigation system to serve global users by 2020, with priority going to countries involved in the new Silk Road initiative. In 2020, the BDS might offer different positioning accuracy choices and could provide centimeter-level accuracy under certain requirements, said Lu Weijun, a BDS expert at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications.

Drawing the Genetic History of Ice Age Eurasian Populations

A research team led by Prof. FU Qiaomei from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IVPP of CAS) and other international scientists has analyzed genome-wide data from 51 Eurasians from ~45,000-7,000 years ago and provided the first vivid look at the genetic history of modern humans in Eurasia before the start of agriculture ~8,500 years ago. Their findings were published as an ARTICLE in Nature with the title “The genetic history of Ice Age Europe” on May 2.

Scientist's Work Led to First Tibet Railway

Lai Yuanming, 52, a leading permafrost expert, provided the solution. His research solved the two major problems - preventing the track from buckling due to ice melting on the roadbed, and improving thermal stability that led to Tibet's first railway. The success of his research has brought Lai honors, including a number of science and technology awards from the Chinese central government and the local government in Gansu province. He was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011 - the top honor for Chinese researchers - at the age of 49.
