Loss of Work Productivity in Warming World

Scientists from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, together with colleagues from China and UK, synthesized 4363 responses to a global online survey in 2016, the most extensive global survey about the effect of heat stress on the WPL currently available, in order to quantify the effects of heat stress on work productivity in different countries for the year.

Geophysical Exploration Sheds Light on Ancient Silk Road State

GUO Ziqi, a scientist who usually searches for oil and minerals deep below ground, has been helping shed light on an ancient state buried along the Silk Road. GUO and his team from the Aerospace Information Research Institute have been helping archaeologists explore Qiuci, which could be dated back to 2,000 years in what is today Kuqa County, in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

China to Launch Another 11 BeiDou-3 Satellites in 2018

China will launch another 11 BeiDou-3 satellites by the end of 2018, adding to its domestic BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS). China has already launched eight BeiDou-3 satellites. The satellites will provide initial services for countries and regions along the Belt and Road by the end of the year.

Chinese Space-based Remote Sensing Technology Helps Discover Heritage in Tunisia

Ten new archeological sites in southern Tunisia were discovered thanks to Chinese space-based remote sensing technology, Tunisian authorities said Thursday. The archaeological sites, dating back to ancient Roman times, are located in three Tunisian provinces -- Gafsa, Tataouine and Medenine, said Tunisian Culture Minister Mohamed Zine El-Abidine at a press conference.

China to Offer Technological Support for Africa's Anti-desertification Project

China has approved a project to offer technological support for the construction of Africa's Great Green Wall, the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences said on Tuesday. Proposed by the African Union in 2007, Africa's Great Green Wall initiative aims to reverse desertification spreading drought, famine, and poverty through the Sahel region.

China Attracts More Students from B&R Countries

Bigyan Neupane is busy completing experiments and working on his thesis so that he can graduate this summer. The Nepalese international student is currently studying for a PhD at Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Thanks to a scholarship from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Neupane has been able to focus on his research and studies in China without financial worries.

New Shrimp Gets Queenly Name

A new species of shrimp with a regally red tail discovered in Myanmar has been named after the 15th century queen who brought peace to the region. The Shin Sawbu shrimp (Streptocephalus shinsawbuae) live in seasonal pools and swim with a graceful backstroke.

Meteorological Silk Road Pattern May Take A Great Toll on Eurasian Climate Anomalies in North-jet Years

Prof. LU Riyu and Dr. HONG Xiaowei from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics previously found that there was a significant positive relationship between the Silk Road Pattern and the north-south displacement of the Asian jet. However, in a recent study, they demonstrated that this relationship was robust only in north-jet years, and absent in south-jet years (the relationship was even negative under this condition).

Chinese research vessel Kexue, or Science, recently placed the 400th profiling float in the northwest Pacific Ocean since the country joined the forefront ocean monitoring plan Argo in 2002. It signals the establishment of the first global real-time ocean observation network in China.

A Glimpse in the Flora of Southeast Asia Puts a Spotlight on Its Conservation

Covering only 3 % of Earth's total land area, four overlapping biodiversity hotspots in South East China - Indo-Burma, Philippines, Sundaland and Wallacea - are estimated to be the home of the astonishing 20 to 25 % of higher plant species in the area. While offering an insight into this extraordinary flora, a new special issue published in the open access journal PhytoKeys, contributes to the total count with seventeen new species from the region.

Using remote sensing, Chinese archaeologists believe the have located a city of the Protectorate of the Western Regions, a major city on the Silk Road, in Koyuk Shahri of Luntai County in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
