The American Geophysical Union (AGU) has named SU Hang, a professor at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a 2026 AGU Union Fellow. SU is among 53 scientists selected worldwide for the honor, which recognizes his contributions to fundamental research on atmospheric chemical and physical processes.

Established in 1919, AGU is an international scientific association for Earth and space sciences. Since 1962, it has selected no more than 0.1 percent of its members each year as Union Fellows in recognition of exceptional scientific achievement and sustained contributions to their fields.

SU is director of the State Key Laboratory of Atmospheric Environment and Extreme Meteorology at IAP. He is a member of the European Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

His research focuses on atmospheric chemistry and physics, including atmospheric oxidation capacity, haze formation and aerosol-cloud interactions. He has led research projects under the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Strategic Priority Research Program, China’s National Key R&D Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China’s BRICS international cooperation program.

His previous honors include the AGU Ascent Award, the European Geosciences Union’s Arne Richter Award and the International Aerosol Research Assembly’s Fissan Pui TSI Award. He has also been named a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in geosciences.

SU serves as co-director of the Max Planck–Asia Center for Atmospheric and Earth System Sciences (MAC-AIR), where he supports international research exchanges and collaboration.

The 2026 AGU Fall Meeting, including the Union Fellows award ceremony, will be held in San Francisco in December.
