A significant step forward in China-Central Asia scientific collaboration was taken with the inaugural meeting of the Dialogue Mechanism among Leaders of China-Central Asia National Research Institutions on June 26. Held in Urumqi, Xinjiang, the event marks a new phase of institutionalized and substantive progress in science and technology cooperation between China and its Central Asian neighbors.

The meeting, hosted by the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), convened under the themes of "Open Science for Sustainable Development" and "Deepening Scientific Collaboration for a Resilient Region." Over 120 leaders, CAS Members, and experts from research institutions across China and the five Central Asian countries participated, with 21 new members officially joining the Dialogue Mechanism.

Participants agreed to establish the Dialogue Mechanism as a dynamic platform for sci-tech cooperation within the broader China-Central Asia framework. The focus will be on translating cooperation intentions into concrete project deliverables and jointly addressing common regional challenges, including ecological risks, water scarcity, and climate change. This initiative aims to provide robust scientific and technological support for sustainable development and resilience building across the region.

Key outcomes of the meeting included the initiation of the International Science Data Alliance (ISDA), designed to support ecological governance and green transformation through digital solutions. Additionally, the first flagship project of the Dialogue Mechanism, the "International Program for Sustainable Development of Aral Sea Region," was launched. This program will advance regional sustainable development and support the "Green Aral Sea Science Initiative" and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The establishment of this Dialogue Mechanism is a significant achievement, stemming from an initiative issued on September 19, 2023, by XIEG and 28 national research institutions from China and Central Asia. The initiative, titled "Forge Synergies for Development, Jointly Build a Beautiful Silk Road," was recognized as a multilateral cooperation outcome at the Third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation.

The Dialogue Mechanism is poised to strengthen policy alignment, consolidate cooperation consensus, and enhance knowledge sharing and capacity building among participating nations. It represents a commitment to leveraging scientific expertise for shared prosperity and a more resilient future for China and Central Asia.
