A new report by Chinese scientists, released on December 7 in northeast China's Shenyang city, has urged enhanced prevention and management of extreme forest fires, stronger scientific research, and more international cooperation on fire carbon emissions in order to address global climate change.

In a virtual signing ceremony held on November 29, 2023, Prof. WU Yirong, Director-General of the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), inked a Memorandum of Understanding with Salvatore Aricò, Chief Executive Officer of the International Science Council (ISC), marking the commencement of International Program Office (IPO) for the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) Program which has stepped into the second phase.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina have, in advance of the UN Climate Conference (COP 28) that begins on Nov. 30 in Dubai, announced the second joint Science for Future conference in Berlin/Germany in autumn 2024. The electron beam of the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) achieved more than 5 nC of bunch charge at 6 GeV via the booster on Nov. 17, marking a key milestone for the HEPS project. As one of China’s key scientific and technological infrastructure projects during the 13th Five-year Plan, construction on HEPS began in Huairou Science City on June 29, 2019. The project is expected to be ready for operation at the end of 2025.

A prototype of spaceborne optical switching system, independently developed by research team from the Xi'an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics was recently launched into space with the 'Xiguang-1' satellite, and conducted in-orbit validation. Ground test results indicated that the satellite-based optical switching system functions properly, with complete high-spectral image information and reached "zero errors" and "zero packet loss" after ground decoding, all achieved the established goals, proving the in-orbit experiment of high-speed optical switching technology a success.

Professor QIU Feng, a researcher from the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was awarded the inaugural IQ Award at the 11th International Low Level Radio Frequency Workshop (LLRF2023) held in Gyeongju, South Korea on October 25. QIU was the world's first scientist to receive this award. He was recognized for his outstanding contributions in the field of low-level radio frequency (LLRF) control, including advanced disturbance observer-based control, real-time iterative learning control for beam loading compensation, robust techniques for suppressing field emission-induced cavity faults, and high precision radio frequency signal calibration algorithm.

Two research institutions affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Science and Technology Information Center of the Ministry of Higher Education and Innovations of Uzbekistan in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on October 11 to boost open science framework strategic cooperation.

The project is planned to conduct cross-scale research on the brain connectome of macaque monkeys. It will integrate high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging and high-speed optical imaging techniques and establish joint platforms for data analysis and sharing.

AN Zhisheng, a geoscientist from the Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences has received the 2023 Roger Revelle Medal of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), according to an AGU announcement recently. AN was "recognized for his exceptional contributions to understanding the global significance of Chinese loess, fundamental monsoon dynamics, and global climate changes and providing key international leadership".
