An international team led by Chinese researchers has unveiled a new image showing the supermassive black hole M87. The first image of M87, released by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration in April 2019, impressed people deeply with its donut-like shape. The new image shows not only the black hole, but also its accretion disk and the jet flow to show the relation between the black hole and its surrounding environment. The new image of M87 was obtained using 16 telescopes at various locations across the world.

During the 2023 Space Day of China, CGTN's science journalist Yang Zhao visited the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) to have a closer look at lunar soil and see how it inspires scientists and artists at the same time.

Arjin Mountains, a large uninhabited area in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, has been getting warmer and wetter over the past 30 years due to climate change, according to Chen Xi, head of the Xinjiang Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Chen and his team, mostly from the Xinjiang Branch of the CAS and the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, just finished a scientific expedition to the area from April 1 to April 7, which is the first whole-area comprehensive field research done there since 1984.

China has made a leap in the infrared system for the Accurate Measurement of Solar Magnetic Field, which is the first astronomical telescope working in the mid-infrared wavelength worldwide.

An allium garden in Kunming, southwest China's Yunnan Province has recently been opened to the public. And the garden marks the fifth anniversary of a joint allium research project between China and Uzbekistan. The Kunming Center of the China-Uzbekistan Global Allium Garden was launched in 2018 to collect, conserve and exhibit allium, as well as support allium research, utilization and public education. Recently, scientists from both countries gathered in the city to mark the project's fifth anniversary and discuss biodiversity protection.
