Xie Yonghong is the head of the Dongting Lake Station for Wetland Ecosystem Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Researchers conduct studies on the ecosystem of the Dongting Lake wetland in this station, which was founded in 2009. Xie Yonghong has played an important role during the establishment of this station since its preparation phase in 2007.

Muztagh Ata, standing at an elevation of 7,546 meters, is located on the Pamir Plateau in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It is known as the "father of ice mountains." The glaciers here not only serve as the source of many river branches but also provide vital water resources for the locals. If these glaciers keep melting, the downstream rivers will gradually dry up, leading to ecological disasters such as arid climates and desertification.

China has developed and run a trial of its "four-second electromagnetic catapult microgravity experimental device." The device uses electromagnetic ejection to create a microgravity experimental environment on the ground, and is expected to improve technological testing conditions. It's hoped it will benefit research, including for China's space station, lunar and Mars exploration.

Fifteen whale species were spotted during a recent scientific deep-sea expedition carried out by Chinese researchers in the northern waters of the South China Sea. A team of researchers from the Marine Mammal and Marine Bioacoustics Laboratory of the Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) conducted the scientific expedition which aimed to conduct research on the diversity, population levels and distribution patterns of whales in the South China Sea.

The Three Gorges Reservoir region, home to the world's largest hydropower project, covers about 10,000 square km along the Yangtze River, China's longest waterway. The seasonal gaps in the reservoir's water levels have resulted in a water-level fluctuation zone covering 349 square kilometers along the Yangtze River. The zone suffers environmental problems, including soil erosion and pollution. Researchers of the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment under CAS have, since 2007, conducted a raft of studies on soil erosion, non-point source pollution, and ecological restoration of the water-level fluctuation zone in the reservoir area.

A Chinese research team has released the most comprehensive primate brain cell atlas to date. The research, published in the acclaimed academic journal Cell, provides a foundation for studying debilitating brain diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The team, led by the Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and BGI-Research, used China's independently developed Stereo-seq data processing technology to obtain the most complete primate brain data to date. The team's research has profound implications for understanding the development of brain diseases.

Scientists from different countries visit China's manned submersible Shenhai Yongshi, or Deep Sea Warrior, on board China's research vessel Tansuo-2, or Exploration 2, in Sanya, south China's Hainan Province, July 12, 2023. The ship is 87.2 meters long and 18.8 meters wide, with a full-load displacement of 6,800 tons. It can carry 60 researchers and has a maximum speed of 14.2 knots and a cruising range of 15,000 nautical miles.

China has made significant progress in forest fire prevention. Forest fires have decreased significantly since 2000. "Considering China's vast forested area of 220 million hectares, these achievements make significant contributions to global CO2 reduction," said a Chinese expert.

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), which is being built 700 meters below Jiangmen City in south China's Guangdong Province, has completed the installation of the equatorial layer of its core structure, a plexiglass spherical structure. China's next-generation neutrino detector is expected to be completed by the end of 2023 and put into use in 2024.

A team of Chinese researchers arrived at the Arjin Mountains, an uninhabited zone in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, for the first comprehensive scientific survey of the area in 40 years. The scientific investigation is led by scientists at the Xinjiang Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography under CAS.

Yulong Snow Mountain National Field Observation and Research Station for Cryosphere and Sustainable Development, set up by Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources of Chinese Academy of Sciences, is located in Lijiang City in southwest China's Yunnan Province. Since 2006, researchers have regularly monitored the condition of the Baishui River No. 1 Glacier and its surrounding environment on the snow mountain.
