During the 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves in Hangzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province, the secretary of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere Programme, Antonio Abreu, praised China's 34 diverse biosphere reserves as exemplary models demonstrating how socio-economic development can coexist with environmental conservation. Global experts on Wednesday convened in Hangzhou in east China to explore how oasis biosphere reserves can advance sustainable development in arid regions. The event, "Oasis Biosphere Reserves Empower the Sustainable Development in Arid Lands," was held as a side session of the fifth World Congress of Biosphere Reserves (WCBR), which is taking place from Sept. 22 to 25.
Some 4,000 delegates from over 150 countries and regions gathered in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province, for the 5th World Congress of Biosphere Reserves and discussed ways to protect biosphere reserves and achieve sustainable development.
