Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday met with the representatives of space scientists and engineers who participated in the research and development of the Chang'e-6 lunar mission at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Xi calls for openness, sharing achievements, and ensuring space technology serves humanity. He highlights China's Chang'e lunar mission as benefiting all, encouraging international cooperation. One among all the payloads the Chang'e-6 mission carried onboard is a laser retroreflector INRRI (INstrument for landing-Roving laser Retroreflector Investigations), jointly developed by the National Laboratory of Frascati, National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN-LNF) and the Planetary Mapping and Remote Sensing Laboratory from the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
China has officially begun a new round of lunar exploration and will send the Chang'e-4 probe to the far side of the moon in 2018, China's State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (SASTIND) announced Thursday. The far side of the moon is never visible to Earth because of gravitational forces and has never been explored by humans. Chang'e-4 will be the first mission in human history to embark on this expedition, said Liu Jizhong, chief of the lunar exploration center under SASTIND.
