The South China National Botanical Garden has been providing refuge to tens of thousands of rare and endangered plants over many decades. By nursing the plants outside their natural habitat, scientists have been able to protect the genetic resources, and in some cases, restore the wild population. With more than a million species at risk of extinction globally, there is an urgent need to safeguard our life support systems in the face of the accelerating loss of nature.
