Background 

Synthetic biology is widely regarded as a forward-looking and disruptive technology. The industrial application of synthetic biology is expected to provide new solutions to the major challenges on resources, health and environment faced by human beings. 

The Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology (TIB), Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) is a leading institute in the field of synthetic biology and green bio-manufacturing, well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, playing an important role in serving the national socio-economic sustainable development. 

To encourage more young scientists from the Belt and Road countries and the developing countries to extend their career to Synthetic Biology, TIB will organize the International Training Course on Industrial Synthetic Biotechnology this year.

Contents of the course 

The training course will focus on the theory, practice and application of the Industrial Synthetic Biotechnology. The course consists of: 

• Technical courses: basic theory, methodology, technological progresses and applications of synthetic biotechnology in various fields such as health products, materials, chemicals, fuels, food and feed additives 
• Experimental courses: series of well-designed experiments in synthetic biology to strengthen the technical skills 
• MES 2019: attendance to the Metabolic Engineering Summit (MES 2019, October 20-22, Tianjin). More details could be found at: http://www.chinabiocap.cn/mes2019/index.aspx 
• Site visit: the core facilities of TIB, the national professional maker space for biotechnology, leading biotech companies carefully selected

Eligibility Criteria 

• Age limit: 40 (in principal) 
• Academic background: industrial biotechnology, microbiology, molecular biology, synthetic biology, bioinformatics, metabolic engineering, biocatalytic engineering, fermentation engineering and etc.  
• Self-motivated young scientists/engineers entitled with PhD degree from well-known universities, having research experience in related areas or affiliated with the Centre of Excellence of COMSATS are in priority. 
• Language requirements: good communication skill in English 
• Be in good health
