After emerging as a trade superpower, China aims to become a leading force in scientific research and applications ranging from cosmology and spaceflight to genomics and medicine. Universities across south China are stepping up the recruitment of scientists with advanced degrees gained in Europe or the United States. This strategy has yielded prestigious science prizes and papers, and generated the growth of scientific research clusters in the region.
On Thursday December 22, the signing ceremony on the cooperative research and development agreement of "Direct, nonoxidative conversion of methane to olefin and aromatics” was held in Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP), Dalian. The joint research and development project was established by DICP, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC). On behalf of the three parties, Prof. YANG Xueming, deputy director of DICP, Ms. WANG Xinge, General Manager of China Huanqiu Contracting & Engineering Corporation (a subsidiary of CNPC) and Dr. Atiah S. Chinese scientists have developed methods to make the world's first genetically modified tree shrews, paving the way for the production of "knockout" tree shrews for experimental use, according to research paper published by Cell Research.
Chinese researchers said Wednesday they have identified two Zika antibodies from an infected patient that could provide mice with complete protection against the mosquito-borne virus, a finding that could lead to the development of much needed anti-Zika therapies and vaccines.
Scientists from IAP play an important role in the manufacture of payload and the development of TanSat data application systems. They have developed the remote sensing theory of XCO2 retrievals, inverse CO2 flux methods, and the satellite data validation systems. In particular, Prof. LIU Yi's team developed an advanced carbon dioxide retrieval algorithm for satellite measurements, and the retrieved XCO2 agrees well with TCCON measurements in a RMSE of 1.48 ppmv. Prof. TIAN Xiangjun's team developed carbon cycle data assimilation system (Tan-Tracker). These achievements will become the kernel parts of TanSat operational data processing systems.
