The 28-volume History Series of Science and Technology in Ancient China has been off the press.

    Decades of national efforts have recently seen the successful compilation and publication of two significant book series on ancient Chinese history of science & technology and astronomy. Coordinated by Beijing-based CAS Institute for the History of Natural Science, the publications are regarded the most systematic and authoritative works yet written by Chinese scholars to demonstrate the S&T civilization in China's antiquity.

    The History Series of Science and Technology in Ancient China, initiated in 1990 and approved by CAS in 1992, comprises a total of 28 volumes of monographs as well as related reference books on disciplinary and interdisciplinary S&T development along the history. With former CAS president LU Jiaxi as the editor-in-chief, Chinese scholars carried out 18 years of diligent research, analyzing new historical data and adding to more comprehensive and scientific understandings about the subject. For instance, special volumes on the histories of physics were compiled for the first time compared with traditional documentation. In 2007, the volumes on ancient China scientific ideology and water conservancy won the GUO Moruo Awards on Chinese History, China's top awards for history research.

    The Great Series on History of Chinese Astronomy is by far the most systematic and comprehensive recording on the evolvement of astronomy science in ancient China. The project was proposed in 1979 and officially kicked off in 1990. Thirty years of endeavors by domestic scholars have harvested a 10-volume work, which depicted various aspects of the discipline's evolution, and revealed the relationship between rational astronomic thinking and the ideology/ culture in the old days. Among them, The Astronomic History of Chinese Minority Groups is a pioneering exploration. The 470-thousand-word Dictionary of Ancient China Astronomy will be a very helpful reference book. Another three volumes on astronomic ideology, calendar and horoscopy have been selected into China's national academic book series library.

    The History Series of Science and Technology in Ancient China and  The Great Series on History of Chinese Astronomy  are respectively published by Science Press and China Science and Technology Press.

    The history of science and technology in China is both long and rich with many contributions to the world's S&T development. Much of the early Western work on the history of science in China was done by British biochemist Noel Joseph Needham. As early as in 1954, Dr. Needham started a project to study the science and civilization of ancient China with an international team of collaborators, which produced a series of volumes titled Science and Civilisation in China published under the Cambridge University Press.
