    The opening ceremony for the 36th Scientific Assembly of the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) was held on the evening of July 17 in Beijing. Chinese President HU Jintao sent his congratulations to the Assembly.

    Launched in 1958 as a component of the International Council for Science, COSPAR's objectives are to promote, on an international level, scientific research in space, with emphasis on the exchange of results, information and opinions, and to provide a forum, open to all scientists, for the discussion of problems that may affect scientific space research. The organization of scientific assemblies is an approach of the organization to achieve its objectives. This is the first time that the assembly is held in China.

    Jointly organized by the CAS Center for Space Science and Applied Research and the Beijing Institute of Technology, the seven-day conference have brought together hundreds of space researchers from more than 50 space agencies and institutions across the world.

    The ultimate objective of man's universe exploration is to create a better space for living and development, says Chinese Vice Premier ZENG Peiyan at the opening.

    China maintains that efforts should be made to strengthen cooperation and exchanges among different countries in light of UN's agreement in the field and on the basis of equality and mutual benefits, peaceful utilization and common development, Zeng stresses.

    China will support, as always, various activities of peaceful utilization of outer space, extensively participate in international programs of space research and exploration, and promote bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the field, says the vice premier. We will join other countries in the world to make sustained efforts at establishing space ethics and maintaining space orders.

    Also present at the opening were CAS President LU Yongxiang, head of China Space Administration SUN Laiyan, CAS Vice President and chair of the Local Organizing Committee of the 36th COSPAR Scientific Assembly JIANG Mianheng, and COSPAR leaders.
