
A CAS website on popular science (www.kepu.net.cn) wins increasing praise from the general public. The total number of its visitors has been over 30 million since its launching on Oct. 25, 1999, with an increase of daily hit from 800 to over 50 thousand.
Maintained by the CAS Computer Network Information Center (CNMIC), the website comprises of 70 virtual museums on various subjects, such as earthquakes, the Yarlung Zangbo Canyon, animals in south China’s Yunnan Province, insects, lakes, vegetation, ice and snow, dinosaurs, astronomy and aquatic creatures. Ten of the museums are in English and the rest in Chinese.
Based on CAS scientific databases and resources, the website disseminates scientific knowledge, methods and spirit by using simple language and with the help of multimedia and virtual technologies. It creates a combination of images text and sound to meet the needs of viewers at various levels: from laymen to experts.
