The cloning of a group of calves from an adult individual' s somatic cells, making China a few countries in the world capable of cloning large-size livestock from somatic cells.

Major breakthrough in the exploration of the inter-relations between the Tibetan Plateau and Asian monsoon, revealing the staged uplift of the Plateau in geological history and its close relevance with the evolution of the Asian monsoon and great ice age in the Northern Hemisphere.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences scored, among others, the following eight major research achievements in 2002, according to an announcement from the recent enlarged winter session of the Party' s Leading Group at CAS.
1. The completion of draft and detailed maps of whole genome of indica rice and a detailed map of rice chromosome IV, leading the world in the field.
2. The development of various quasi-one-dimensional nano-structural materials, and the first measurement of radial mechanic properties of a single carbon nano-tube and nano line.
3. The synthesis of two new nuclides: ß-delayed fission (ßDF) nuclide 142Ho in the proton-drip zone and a ßDF precursor nuclide 149Yb.
4. The development of Godson-1 chip, a high-performance and general-purpose central processing unit (CPU).
5. The creation of the world' s first thorough solution to the problem of heavy metal contamination in the chromic salts industry at the manufacturing stage, leading a new pattern of the ecological industry, in which the "zero discharge of chrome" and in-depth multi-component utilization of chrome resources are realized.
6. The pinpoint of a number of major disease-related genes and the first cloning of a group of genes leading to the incidence of hereditary diseases such as dentinogenesis imperfecta 1, which is one of the most common genetic tooth problems causing brittle teeth for one out of every six to eight thousand humans in the world, brachydactylia and some functional genes including those from germ-resistant peptide protein at rat epididymis.
7. The cloning of a group of calves from an adult individual' s somatic cells, making China a few countries in the world capable of cloning large-size livestock from somatic cells.
8. Major breakthrough in the exploration of the inter-relations between the Tibetan Plateau and Asian monsoon, revealing the staged uplift of the Plateau in geological history and its close relevance with the evolution of the Asian monsoon and great ice age in the Northern Hemisphere.
