Novel orchid varieties cultivated

Aug 13, 2007

A research team led by Prof. DUAN Jun from the CAS South China Botanical Garden has been successful in breeding new orchid hybrids. One of them, Haraenopsis Nanzhi Pink (resulting from Phalaenopsis Wedding Promenade and Haraella retrocalla) has been accepted as a new hybrid genus by the London-based Royal Horticulture Society (RHS). It is the first successful registration at RHS made by orchid breeders from Chinese mainland.

The researchers also have made progress in the development of a quick breeding method for the butterfly orchid's high-quality sprouts. They could produce high quality seedling of Phalaenopsis, known as 'queen orchid.' by using its flower stem section as explant, inducing flower stem seedling with a unique culture medium, performing proliferation with the fascicular bud stem tip or stem section. The method, which is characterized as being simple, practical, feasible and high in application value, has won a patent right for invention from the State Intellectual Property Office.

Right now, the researchers are working hard to produce a line of scented Phalaenopsis hybrids for commercial production.
