In cooperation with the Keke Xili (Hoh Xil) National Nature Reserve in Qinghai, the CAS Institute of Zoology (IOZ) has recently opened a Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Wildlife Research Station in Keke Xili, which lies in the border areas of the Tibet Autonomous Region, Qinghai Province and the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Its plaque was jointly unveiled by IOZ Vice Director-general WEI Fuwen and Vice Administrator of the Researve XIAO Penghu.
Covering an area of 45,000 sq.km, the Nature Reserve encompasses major categories of plateau ecology systems in China. In particular, such eco-system as the alpine grassland, desert and lakes and wetland and related wildlife and nature landscapes are rarely seen in the world. It is considered as a ideal place to carry out studies of alpine zoology.
By teaming up with scientists and administrators in related fields both at home and abroad, the station will conduct research into the impacts of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway on ungulates and biodiversity, the monitoring and investigation methods for wildlife in the Plateau, the impact of species isolation on alpine wildlife. The station strives to become a research and publicity center for alpine wildlife protection.
