Survey on coal and coal-bd gas exploitation in Xinjiang

Aug 04, 2008

Under the auspices of the CAS Academic Division (CASAD), from 26 to 29 July, a taskforce consisting of CAS Members and other experts conducted a survey on coal and coal bed methane (CBM) in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The four-day study is part of a CASAD research project on the integrated development and exploitation of coal and CBM in Xinjiang, a major strategic option of the Regional government for establishing a comprehensive energy base.

Accompanied by local officials, the team made an inspection tour to a coal mine and an oilfield, both being located in the east part of the hydrocarbon-rich Junggar Basin and Tarim Basin on the two sides of the Tianshan Mountains.

The researchers made an on-the-spot survey on coal mining, power generation, transport facilities and the prospecting activities on CBM. Their observation highlighted the current state of new technologies applied to the practice in these aspects.

According to experts, the future development in Xinjiang should give importance to the introduction and adoption of advanced expertise and equipment in the exploitation of the deposits of coal and CBM.

While advancing the related industries, they admonished, efforts should be made to protect the local ecology. The mode for the industrial development should be coordinated in a balanced way and under a unified leadership so as to become a pace-setter in the national drive of development and integrated exploitation of coal and CBM.
