CAS scientist wins IMO prize

Prof. QIN Dahe, a glaciologist and climatologist from the CAS Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, has been elected to win the prestigious Prize of the International Meteorological Organization (IMO) in 2008.


    Prof. QIN Dahe, a glaciologist and climatologist from the CAS Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, has been elected to win the prestigious Prize of the International  Meteorological Organization (IMO) in 2008.

    The Executive Council of IMO confers the 53rd IMO Prize, the Organization's top award, to Prof. Qin for his achievements in cryosphere and climate research, his involvement in the preparation of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Scientific Assessments Reports, and his contribution to meteorological services at the national and at the international levels, according to an IMO press release.

    Prof. Qin is the second Chinese scientist to win the honor. Prof. YE Duzheng, a veteran scientist from the CAS Institute of Atmospheric Physics, was awarded the prize in 2003.

    Prof. Qin is also a member of CAS and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, former Administrator of the China Meteorological Administration and former Permanent Representative of China with the WMO. He is the first Chinese ever crossing the South Pole. As co-chair of the Working Group I of IPCC, he made outstanding contributions to the Fourth Assessment Report of IPCC. The panel shared the Nobel Peace Prize of 2007 with Al Gore.
