Studies on grain output forecast make progress

May 28, 2008

A research project on crop output prediction, which was implemented by Prof. CHEN Xikang and colleagues from the CAS Academy of Mathematics and Systems Sciences, has achieved outstanding results and passed the acceptance check under the auspices of the CAS Bureau for Basic Research.

With a nonlinear input-output technique on important coefficients, and a dynamic input-occupancy-output model and state-of-the-art output prediction model at its core, the project has greatly increased the accuracy of the national grain output forecast.

Over the past four years, the researchers submited to the Chinese government its annual report on grain output prediction at the end of each April. The forward time of prediction is over half a year, and the average error rate of prediction is only 1.26 percent. In 2007, in particular, the national grain yield was estimated at 5.03 billion tons while the actual output nationwide was 5.015 billion tons, with a error rate of only 0.3%.
