A demo project on aquatic wildlife protection and sustainable exploitation in the Yangtze Valley was launched by CAS Institute of Hydrobiology (IOH) in cooperation with several local administrative and research bodies on 21 December, 2007, in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province

    The four-year project will be a component of the HSBC Climate Partnership, a $100 million joint initiative of HSBC Group Holding, the Climate Group, Earthwatch Institute, and Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and WWF.

    With the support of the project, researchers will carry out studies, from 2008 to 2011, in the following aspects.

    1. Several demonstration projects for ecological fishery are to be launched in freshwater lakes at appropriate sites in central Hubei Province and vicinities surrounding Anqing City along the Anhui section of the Yangtze mainstream. With the aid of a variety of new concept-promoting measures such as the governmental policies, personnel training and a publicity drive, a new model of fish-farming management in favor of the indigenous lacustrine ecosystem is to be popularized in the Yangtze valley so as to reduce the negative aftermath caused by the excessive catch and predatory exploitation of the aquatic resources such as the enclosed fish farms

    2. In order to mitigate the unfavorable impacts of waterworks on the aquatic bio-resources in the Valley, efforts will be made to facilitate the re-linkage of isolated lakes and introduction of fish fries, opening optimization of lake dykes, and establishment for fish migration along the water routes in the Valley through such moves as  information release about the Yangtze's fishing seasons, optimal schemes for flooding deployment at the Three-Gorge dam, trans-departmental coordination among the hydrological agencies in the Valley

    3. To effective protect the rare and endangered Yangtze cetaceans in the Valley, some demonstration projects are to be inaugurated in selected sites in Hubei and Anhui provinces by introducing an approach based on ecosystem integrity protection.

    4. With an objective of building up a multi-partnership network for the conservation of Yangtze's  aquatic biota, a variety of supporting steps, involving policy studies, consultation service and publicity will be taken to protect the native ecosystem and endemic fish species .

    5. Specifically, further efforts will be made to monitor and study the current state and living conditions of such freshwater wildlife as the freshwater dolphin and porpoise, Yangtze sturgeon, and the Chinese mitten-handed crab (Eriocheir sinensis), exploring the possible influences brought about by the on-going global climate change and developing feasible countermeasures for the sustainable exploitation of the natural bio-resources in the Yangtze. Work on consultation, planning, supervision, demonstration and publicity promotion will also be unfolded for the protection and rational use of the suburban lakes, aquatic resources and repair of the depleted lakeside ecosystems. .
