Sino-Russia joint lab for atmospheric physics unveiled

May 28, 2007

The inauguration of Chinese-Russian Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics was held on May 21, 2007 in Beijing.

Present at the ceremony were Director of the CAS Institute of Atmospheric Physics WANG Huijun and his Russian counterpart Prof. Georgii S. Golitsyn, director of Institute of Atmospheric Physics under the Russian Academy of Sciences, CAS members YE Duzheng, TAO Shiyan, ZENG Qingcun and LU Daren, as well as some 100 experts from the both sides.

The two directors addressed the official kickoff of the new lab. Words of congratulation were also delivered on behalf of the CAS by Prof. CHANG Xu, deputy director of the CAS Bureau of Science & Technology for Resources and Environment. The nameplate of the lab was unveiled by Prof. Ye and Tao.

The Russian Academy of Sciences has long been an important partner of CAS, and time has witnessed comprehensive cooperation between the two. During CAS President LU Yongxiang's visit to Russia in July 2004, he proposed to establish a joint research center for better bilateral exchange and communication. It was quickly answered by the Russian side with the suggestion of a united lab on atmospheric physics. By last September, an official agreement had been signed between the two for the preparation of the lab.

In fact, as early as in the beginning of the 1990s, an active partnership was established between the two institutes. They have worked together for a series of major projects, and co-organized a number of symposiums to discuss hot issues in the field. The mutual trust and mutual benefit between them have already set up a model for the newly-founded lab.

The preparation work of the lab has been attended to by leaders of the academies, and the lab is going to be unveiled at the Russian Institute of Atmosphere Physics upon President Lu's visit to Russia in this June soon.

The launch-off of the lab scores a good outset for scientists of both institutes, and it is expected to reap fruitful results as planned through closer and more in-depth collaborations.
