The CAS Wuhan Botanical Garden (WBG) has recently entered an agreement with the Italian firm Kiwigold Consortium to grant the world-wide propagation and commercialization rights of a novel, hairless, yellow-fleshed variety of kiwifruit, which has the potential to make a difference to the international kiwifruit industry.

Named Jintao (golden peach in Chinese), the new cultivar (Actinidia chinensis Planch) was cultivated by a team of pomologists headed by Dr. Huang Hongwen, WBG director, from the wild strains they collected during a plant germplasm survey in southeast China's Jiangxi Province in 1981. It took the researchers dozes of years to evaluate and study the wild genotype in the garden. During the period from 1998 to 2000 the trials of the cultivar were conducted with good result in Italy, France and Greece. Noted for its higher productivity, better fruit quality and improved heat tolerance, according to experts, Jintao offers global growers an alternative to Hort16A, a second-generation flagship strain of the kiwifruit developed by New Zealand breeders.

In 2001, WBG filed for a patent right for Jintao in the European Patent Office, and Kiwigold Consortium bought the cultivar's propagation right from WBG for 10 years in European countries. In 2003, the two sides signed a contract allowing the Italian firm to enjoy the propagation right in Europe until 2028 by paying a fixed annual royalty, and also a new contract for Jintao's commercialization in South America providing for a collective royalty on production. In August 2005, the Italian firm increased the royalty to propagate the new cultivar throughout the world.

The move is hailed as a pioneering attempt of Chinese researchers in commercializing their crops with independent property rights in the world market.
