Under the coordination of the Yunnan Provincial Environmental Protection Bureau, researchers from 19 institutions of higher learning, including the CAS Institute of Botany and the CAS Institute of Zoology, recently carried out an in-depth survey of the landscape of the biological species resources in the southwest China's province.
The biologists catalogued endangered the species under state protection and wild plants and animals with significant economic values or use potentials. They also issued a red list of rare and endangered animals and plants as well as precious tree species.
Yunan is crowned as the kingdom of plants and the fairyland of animals. However, a large number of wild animals and plants in the region are facing "insularity" and "habitat fragmentation," leading to increasingly a limited natural living environment. The provincial government plans to establish a joint conference system to coordinately protect and manage the species resources and cope with such a grim situation.
