CAS President meets with WMO Secretary-General

    CAS President Lu Yongxiang met with Mr. Michel Jarraud, incoming Secretary-General of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on February 23 in Beijing.

    President Lu briefed Mr. M. Jarraud on the recent progress achieved by CAS, and the host and guest reviewed with satisfaction the long-term cooperation between CAS and WMO over the past decades.

    During the meeting, President Lu stressed the successful work in jointly sponsoring a permanent meteorological forum (CTWF) by CAS, the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and WMO. Since its establishment in 2000, two international workshops and one training course have been held, making contributions to advancing meteorological studies and providing opportunities of cooperation and exchanges for young researchers, especially those in developing countries. Mr. M. Jarraud also showed his satisfaction over the progress of the forum.

    The WMO Secretary-General accepted an invitation from President Lu to co-chair CTWF with an objective of jointing efforts to promote the further development of the forum. Its third international workshop is to be held in October 2004 in Beijing.
