Second CAS Expert Consultation Committee Established for International Strategy

The second International Strategy Expert Consultation Committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) was established in Beijing on Mar. 28th, to promote science and education innovation globally. 

The committee gathered 30 experts, ranging from areas and fields such as relevant international cooperation and management ministries, CAS key areas, and education, to CAS international cooperation platform. 

CAS Member GUO Huadong, acts as the director of the consultation committee and GAO Fu, ZHANG Suojiang vice director. The first plenary meeting was also held accordingly. 

The consultation committee is set up as one of the important safeguard mechanisms for the implementation of the Academy’s internationalization strategy. The committee will play a vital consultation role in evaluating, guiding and leading international development of CAS. 

Experts suggested that CAS should introduce more talent including scientists on cutting-edge discoveries and inter-discipline researches, especially high-end strategic scientists. The Academy should encourage its scientists to take office in international organizations and welcome offices of international organizations to settle in China, the Committee suggested. 

The experts also attached importance to the participation of international scientific and technological organizations in influential international big science plans. The first consultation committee was established in 2013 with 21 members. YAO Tandong, Chinese glaciologist and a member of CAS was the director. Two CAS members act as vice directors. They are Chinese palaeontologist ZHOU Zhonghe and theoretical physicist WU Yueliang.

The two consultation committees both focus on the needs of national scientific and technological innovation and Pioneer Initiative of CAS, and contribute a lot in accelerating the international innovation and development of the Academy. 

“China is experiencing radical changes, and we are now engaged in such a great cause - that is to consolidate CAS’ leading position in scientific excellence, high-caliber talent cultivation and think-tank service and to establish CAS a world-class research institution,” said ZHANG Jie, Vice President of CAS.
