Jul 28, 2016

The Nature Publishing Group released The Rising Stars 2016 List as a supplement this Thursday, ordering the world’s top 100 leading institutions by the increase of their high-quality science papers.

Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) boasts the fastest growing output in world’s high-quality science and has maintained its position as one of world’s leading institutions, according to this List ordered by change in Weighted Fractional Count (WFC) from 2012 to 2015.

The 2016 List is intended to present countries and institutes with high-quality research papers increase. The ranking was conducted on the basis of changes of their absolute contribution value to Nature Index from 2012 to 2015. The index traced world’s 68 high-quality natural science journals in more than 8,000 institutes covering papers published.

CAS ranks first among peer institutions, indicating that it has become a significant contributor of high-level science papers. The Academy ranks the first for the fourth consecutive year among global science institutions in the Nature Index, according to a Index published by NPG this April. The scientists of CAS, the world's largest scientific organization, comprising 114 institutions and 48,500 researchers, made the largest contribution to high-quality research included in the April index, a contribution that has grown by a compound annual growth rate of 6.8 percent since 2012.

China has done an outstanding work in scientific research over the past four years and remained fast growing in research field including physics, chemistry, life science and earth and environmental science. Among the 100 institutions in this rising star list, China owns 40 of them, with nine ranking among the top 10. Meanwhile, 24 institutions are from the United States, which remains the biggest high-quality scientific paper contributor in the world.

Nature Index is a database of author affiliation information collated from research articles published in an independently selected group of 68 high-quality science journals. It provides a close to real-time proxy for high-quality research output at the institutional, national and regional level.

Nature Publishing Group (NPG) is a publisher of high impact scientific information in print and online. NPG publishes journals, online databases and services across the life, physical, chemical and applied sciences.
