
Sri Lankan Scientist Granted Science and Technology Cooperation Award of Guangdong
Professor Tilak P.D. Gamage, Faculty of Fishery and Marine Sciences and Technology, University of Ruhuna, was granted the Guangdong Province Science and Technology Cooperation Award 2019 on March 25, 2020.
Three other scientists from Germany, France and India were also presented the award this year.
The Guangdong Province Science and Technology Cooperation Award was initiated on October 1, 2000 by the Guangdong Province, with the intention of rewarding citizens and organizations for their contribution in promoting science and technology in Guangdong. The award is presented annually and consists of three categories: natural science, technical invention and progress in science and technology.
Professor Gamage is the co-director of the China-Sri Lanka Joint Centre for Education & Research. He has made great contribution to the development of marine sciences between the two countries.
He has promoted the establishment of the "Marine Environment Joint Research Center" in Sri Lanka, with focus on strengthening the study of oceanic atmospheric dynamics in the Indian Ocean region and forecasting and warning of natural disasters along the Maritime Silk Road.
He has also facilitated cooperation between Chinese institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Sri Lankan institutions including the Meteorological Department, National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency, Disaster Management Committee, and Ministry of Higher Education.
Additionally, he has promoted the development of the China-Sri Lanka Joint Master's Degree Program, fostering a vibrant energetic marine science and technology team in Sri Lanka.
