CAS Helps Train Talents in Climate and Oceanography from Sri Lanka

2018-06-20

Supported by the CAS-TWAS President's Fellowship, the CAS "Belt and Road" Scholarship, and the UCAS Scholarship, a total of 12 graduates from Sri Lanka will pursue their PhD or Master's degrees in climate, oceanography and other fields in institutions and universities of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2018.

These 12 students are from the University of Ruhuna, the University of Peradenia, Wayamba University, Sabaragamuwa University, and Jaffna University.

Prof. Gamini Senanayake, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ruhuna, said that Sri Lanka is a country dependent on the ocean for its survival, and it is crucial for the country's development to have opportunities for Sri Lankan students to receive higher education in marine science.

The first master's student enrolled by the China-Sri Lanka Joint Center for Education & Research has graduated and will soon return to work in Sri Lanka. The training program of the joint center has helped to improve Sri Lanka's marine environmental monitoring and research capabilities, as well as its capacity to respond to climate change.
