High Energy Density Physics and Heavy Ion Fusion Experts Visit IMP
2010-07-22

Dr. Antonio Roberto Piriz and Dr. Naeem Ahmad Tahir, two experts on high energy density physics (HEDP) and Heavy Ion Fusion (HIF), visited Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMP) on July, 12-22.

Dr. Piriz, professor with the University of Castilla-La Mancha, Ciudad Real, Spain (UCLM), is the leader of the research group on Fluids and Plasmas and director of the Institute for Energy Research. Dr. Tahir is a senior scientist from GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt, Germany.

The two experts paid a visit to Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL) and gave lectures on heavy ion beam driven high energy density physics and inertial confinement fusion.

Upon the proposal of IMP, the three sides agreed to carry out two experiments on HEDP with the current status of the Cooling & Storage Ring at Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL-CSR): (1) study the stopping dynamics of intense and long pulsed heavy ion beam in ice or solid Ne (Fig.1); (2) investigate the Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) instability during the shock passing through the free surface of a specially shaped target (Fig.2).

Dr. Tahir will do the simulations for these two experiments, while Prof. Piriz will concentrate on the theoretical aspects. Their results will be compared with the theoretical results achieved independently by IMP and also used for designing of the targets and detectors in the experiments.

IMP and UCLM draw up an MoU, under which the both sides will exchange students and staff for research. Prof. Piriz will send students or staff to participate in beam plasma interaction which is planned to be investigated experimentally at HV-ECR platform at IMP.
