IAP scientist Dr. LI Jianping was invited by the president of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) Dr. Tom Beer to become a member of the IUGG Honours and Recognition Committee. This is one of four new committees that IUGG has set up to improve communication with the research scientists that form the membership base of the Union.
Dr. LI Jianping is the Secretary General of Chinese National Committee for IUGG (CNC-IUGG). CNC-IUGG was established by Chinese Academy of Sciences and China Association of Science and Technology in 1979 with the purpose of advancing geophysical sciences in China, strengthening the cooperation and communication with the international community, and increasing visibility and influence of China’s research on earth sciences.
IUGG is a non-governmental, scientific organization, established in 1919. It is one of the 30 scientific Unions presently grouped within the International Council for Science (ICSU).
IUGG is dedicated to the international promotion and coordination of scientific studies of Earth (physical, chemical, and mathematical) and its environment in space. These studies include the shape of the Earth, its gravitational and magnetic fields, the dynamics of the Earth as a whole and of its component parts, the Earth's internal structure, composition and tectonics, the generation of magmas, volcanism and rock formation, the hydrological cycle including snow and ice, all aspects of the oceans, the atmosphere, ionosphere, magnetosphere and solar-terrestrial relations, and analogous problems associated with the Moon and other planets.
IUGG encourages the application of this knowledge to societal needs, such as mineral resources, mitigation of natural hazards and environmental preservation. IUGG is comprised of eight semi-autonomous Associations, each responsible for a specific range of topics or themes within the overall scope of Union activities.
These eight International Associations are:International Association of Cryospheric Sciences (IACS);International Association of Geodesy (IAG);International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA); International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS); International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS); International Association for the Physical Sciences of the Ocean (IAPSO); International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior (IASPEI); International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI) .
The terms of reference for the Honours and Recognition Committee are as follows:
The Committee was formed by the decision of the IUGG Executive Committee meeting held on 9-11 October 2009 in Melbourne (Australia) to consider the topic of honours and recognition and if considered appropriate recommend ways to:
1. develop IUGG Fellows, Medals and Awards programs and maintain oversight of the programs;
2. recommend changes to the policies and statutes and by-laws (if needed) in order to enhance the effectiveness of the IUGG honours and recognition programs;
3. ensure that protocols and nominating procedures for the medals and awards are well defined and properly publicised;
4. recommend procedures for the nomination and selection of Fellows, medallists and awardees;
5. make recommendations to ensure that sufficient and appropriate nominations for the Fellows, Medals and Awards are received; ensure that the Union medals and awards are appropriate and current;
6. ensure that IUGG scientists are nominated for appropriate external awards;
7. search for fund-raising opportunities for the Union honours and recognition programs.
