CAS Scientists Offer Expertise to Thai Ion Beam Bio-technology Center
2010-02-25

Dr.YU Zengliang and Dr.WU Yuejin from Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, CAS visited Chiang Mai University, Thailand January 17th to 23rd. They were appointed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as experts to conduct a comprehensive inspection, assess and provide on-the-spot guidance to the Thai Ion Beam Bio-technology Center.

Dr. WU Yuejin and Dr. YU Zengliang made special reports on the mechanism of ion beam induced rice mutation and progress on ion beam biotechnology research respectively. They had discussions with Thai scientists on relevant scientific and technical issues and gave constructive comments on the development of Thailand Ion Beam Biotechnology Center.

At the suggestion of Prof. Thiraphat Vilaithong, the director of the Thai Ministry of Higher Education Physics Center, scientists from China and Thailand discussed and signed the “Cooperation Agreement between Thai Physics Center and Chinese Academy of Sciences Key Laboratory of Ion Beam Bio-engineering."

The ion beam bio-technology developed by Chinese Academy of Sciences Key Laboratory of Ion Beam Bio-engineering was first reported at "2008 International Plant Mutation of the General Assembly"  in Vienna, which was jointly organized by IAEA and the United Nations FAO (FAO). Ever since then, this technique has attracted widespread attention, and was recommended by the IAEA experts to apply and popularize worldwide. Thailand was the first country that established IAEA-funded Ion Beam Bio-technology Center.
