| CAS establishes a new astronomic base in Inner Mongolia |

CAS is to set up a new base for solar radio observation in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region. Its ground-breaking ceremony was held on 9 September.
Named after Ming Antu (1692-1765), a Mongolian astronomer, the 65-million-yuan (or US$9.3 million) observatory is to be located in Zheng Xiang Bai Qi in Xilingol, Ming's hometown, where there is a good radio environment for such observation.
Equipped mainly with a solar radio spectrometer and a heliograph, the new construction is supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
To be completed in late 2009, the new observatory is to integrate such functions as scientific research, technical renewal of the equipment, academic exchanges and science popularization. |
