Nobel Laureate Zhores Ivanovich ALFEROV Visits CIOMP
2009-12-03

Zhores Ivanovich Alferov, the inventor of the heterotransistor and the winner of 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics, visited Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics (CIOMP) on Nov. 24th, 2009.
During his visit, academician Alferov gave a presentation “Semiconductor Revolution in the 20th Century” to the colleagues and students of CIOMP. The presentation, which consists of Semiconductor research in1930, Transistor discovery, Discovery of laser-maser principle and birth of quantum optoelectronics, Invention and development of the silicon chips, Heterostructure research “God-made” and “Man-made” crystals, is abundant in content and very impressive.
MA Mingya, vice president of CIOMP, introduced to academician Alferov CIOMP's development concept and primary research work. He emphasized the importance of conducting international cooperation and reviewed the  cooperations between CIOMP and institutes of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) over the last 20 years.
Academician Alferov also visited the Engineering Research Center of Semiconductor Laser of CIOMP and noted that CAS and RAS should strengthen their cooperations in scientific frontier.
Alferov has been working in the area of semiconductor heterostructures since 1962 . His contributions to physics and technology of semiconductor heterostructures, especially investigations of injection properties, development of lasers, solar cells, LED's, and epitaxy processes have led to the creation of modern heterostructure physics and electronics.
