Delegation Led by Minister Pinkwart from German State of North Rhine-Westfalia Visit SIBS

An over 20-member official delegation from the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia visited Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences (SIBS) on Nov. 21st.

The delegation was led by Dr. Andreas Pinkwart, Deputy Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia and Minister of Innovation, Science, Research and Technology of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Dr. CHEN Xiaoya, president of SIBS and Dr. JIN Li, managing director of CAS-MPG Partner Institute for Computational Biology (PICB) welcomed the delegation.

Dr. CHEN Xiaoya  noted in his welcome speech that China and Germany keep strong ties in academic community. Among which, the over–30–year cooperation between the Max Planck Society (MPG) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences is an excellent example. He stressed the establishment of PICB is an outcome and also a milestone of the long-term friendship between CAS and MPG, which marked a new level of Sino-German scientific and technological collaboration.

Minister Pinkwart appreciated the warm reception of SIBS and had high opinion of the development of science and technology of China. He said the State of North Rhine-Westfalia attaches great importance to the innovation of science and research. He hoped academic insititutions of North Rhine-Westfalia and China could establish partnership to promote the advance of science and technology of both sides.

With the witness of Minister Pinkwart, two Memorandums of Understanding were signed. One was signed by SIBS and the Ruhr-University Bochum, and the other by PICB and the University of Bonn (Bonn-Aachen Institute of Information Technology and Institute of Informatics).

Situated in the middle of the continent, with a population of 18 million, Nothe Rhine-Westphalia is the hub of Europe’s economy. The State takes pride in hosting the largest concentration of higher education and research facilities in Europe: Some 470,000 talents are studying at 59 universities.
